Sachi no Toge
Hidden away behind gates and fences, private gardens in Kyoto are much more varied than the temple gardens and public parks familiar to visitors and tourists.
This garden stretches that variety considerably – the homeowner is a gardener and plant collector, and this garden incorporates more than 300 distinct cultivars and varieties of plants, across dozens of species of perennials and woody plants. Color theory is used to coordinate the horticultural collection, while a Japanese understanding of creating space and movement brings the whole garden together into a sequence of passages and outdoor rooms.
The name of the garden, sachi no toge, (mountain path of good fortune), evokes this poetic feeling of moving through varied terrain.
